If you’re looking for an interesting and entertaining way to learn about the history of the blues and racism, you found it. The Blues Ain't a Color is an hour-long series of stories performed by Denise La Grassa, accompanied by a three-piece jazz ensemble and paintings by Maria Kern. The stories are interspersed with excerpts from filmed interviews with jazz greats, including Oliver Nelson Jr. These short clips are the most soulful part of the performance. La Grassa's deep throaty singing towards the end is finally convincing, a contrast to some of her performances that aren't quite as heartfelt. Katerina's is a perfect venue for the show: the dark atmosphere and golden-framed everything serve as a wonderful backdrop. The blows to the millennial generation, including an over-the-top impression of teenage texting, made it clear that this show is for an older crowd.—Chelsea Hohn
