The Bling Ring

The title refers to a clique of spoiled SoCal teenagers who reportedly spent more than a year, from October 2008 to August 2009, burglarizing the homes of Hollywood celebrities (Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox, Orlando Bloom) and making off with their cash, clothes, jewelry, and other accoutrements of fame. The kids' story was irresistible to the media, permitting both sensationalism and easy zeitgeist commentary, and that's about as far as writer-director Sofia Coppola takes it in this big-screen dramatization. Like her Marie Antoinette (2006), this is a giddy celebration of glamor and privilege, lightly dressed as satire; the merciless social interactions among the kids sometimes reminded me of Larry Clark's Bully (2001), but the characters are so depthless that ultimately this lands closer to Harmony Korine's cheesy Spring Breakers. With Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, and Emma Watson.
