Danish playwright Astrid Saalbach packs her 1996 play with promising starts. A lonely, emotionally unstable elementary school teacher marries a Moroccan in need of immigration papers while trying to blind herself to his apparent homosexuality. A cloistered suburban mother tries to toughen up her delicate preteen son by teaching him folk dances. A near-mute adolescent boy hits puberty and starts sprouting feathers. But in act one these ideas revolve around a hollow core, and in act two Saalbach overcompensates by focusing almost exclusively on the featherboy, transformed into a messianic rebel figure. Christine Lin's perfunctory direction fails to make sense of Saalbach's evocative but incoherent imagery. Part of Halcyon Theatre's Alcyone Festival. --Justin Hayford
