Todd Bauer's bleak drama, a world premiere directed by Jonathan Wilson, concerns an elderly small-town couple facing the inevitability of leaving their home for assisted living. Herman (Chuck Spencer), arthritic and forgetful, resents his failing physical and mental powers. But it's his wife, Ingrid (Sheila Landahl)—controlling and tough on the outside, terrified underneath—who most stubbornly resists abandoning the "bunker" that has been her refuge but now threatens to become a prison. (The play's title refers to the show's central poetic image—a bird feeder in the yard that Ingrid watches, hoping for the arrival of a rarely sighted species of woodpecker.) The crisis forces their son, Everett (Joshua J. Volkers)—crippled since childhood with cerebral palsy—to face his own limited ability to care for his folks, as well as his emotional distance from parents who protected him but never understood him, leading to a grim climax that is at once startling and utterly predictable. —Albert Williams
