John Huston's second contribution to Frank Capra's “Why We Fight” series (1945) is one of the finest war documentaries ever filmed. It reportedly angered Pentagon officials who saw an antiwar message in its depiction of the grim, hopeless realities of the war in Italy as perceived by ordinary soldiers. But its uncompromising treatment of the despair of battle yields no clear-cut antiwar statement, only the characteristic Huston weariness. A great film, and certainly among Huston's best work. 32 min.
