The Bacchae Revisited | Right Brain Project | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through April 20 2013
Price: $20
Right Brain Project's retelling of Euripides's tragedy opens with a cultishly cheerful cast offering wine and welcome—I got a hand on my knee and a grave "My friend, thanks for being here." "We are assembled," a performer announces; everybody hugs, and away we go. For 90 minutes the love fest doesn't let up, even when the peevish Theban men wrestle to prove their manliness before heading into the woods to force the city's errant women to return. Trouble is, these recalcitrant proto-feminists are enjoying a god-induced orgy. Director Nathan Robbel's overearnest cast fare best when they dance, sing, thump, and cause solemn, warm-hearted mayhem. When called upon to deliver the stilted dialogue, they're understandably lost. —Justin Hayford
