The AWARD Show | Dance Center of Columbia College | Dance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: June 24-27 2009
Price: $15
Many applied but few were chosen: of 45 local candidates, a dozen choreographers were selected to compete for a $10,000 prize to be used for new work. Four of them present pieces on each of three nights of this event administered by the Joyce Theater Foundation; audience preference determines the three finalists, who go on to another round on the fourth evening. At that point, audience members vote alongside an expert panel. The contestants include such heavy hitters as Julia Rhoads of Lucky Plush Productions, Carrie Hanson of the Seldoms, and Molly Shanahan of Mad Shak. But many are less familiar. Francisco Avina--who has a long history in television and industrials--shows a gentle, restrained piece, Track 4, on Wednesday. The same program features recent Chicago transplant Archana Kumar performing an experimental solo that draws on butoh, traditional Indian forms, and modern dance. Friday, Joel Valentin-Martinez's Ask Me in the Morning Light offers a commentary on the Mexican response to a U.S. initiative, the Mexican Emergency Farm Labor Program. --Laura Molzahn
