Adventure, Animated
Whenever Steven Spielberg works in his self-conscious blockbuster mode—as in the Indiana Jones or Jurassic Park movies--his action sequences are staged with such precision that they feel like the work of a sophisticated computer program. This adaptation of the beloved Belgian comic book series, created with the motion-capture animation of Robert Zemeckis’s The Polar Express, feels particularly mechanical. The movie isn't a complete waste: it adequately re-creates the comics' Dickensian characterization, and every frame brims with clever details. But once the action begins, Spielberg's incessant, force-fed "fun" quickly gets exhausting. Jamie Bell is Tintin, Andy Serkis is Captain Haddock, and Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (who played police partners in Hot Fuzz) are inspectors Thompson and Thomson.
