The 24 Hour Plays: Chicago | Gorilla Tango Theatre | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: Mondays. Continues through June 22 2009
Price: $10
Five groups--each comprising a writer, a director, and four actors--have a weekend to create a short, new play apiece. On the following Monday, the results get put onstage before an audience. There's no predicting what you'll end up with--and, of course, that's most of the fun. I didn't see any masterpieces on the night I went, but I left happy all the same. Jenni Castello's playlet about three siblings on a road trip endeared itself with quirky-sweet details, including a car stereo that won't stop playing "Tiny Dancer." And Carrie Bain was a hoot as a customer renting a car in a little comedy by Sarah Gubbins. Even the disasters--basically, the other three pieces--had their charms. This wouldn't work at all if there were any more than five plays or they went on for any longer than ten minutes each. Knowing that any discomfort would be brief freed me to relax and absorb what came along. --Tony Adler
