The 13th Warrior

Banished from his native Baghdad, a tenth-century writer (Antonio Banderas) hooks up with a band of Norse warriors and vows to help them defend their homeland against an enemy whose tactics include decapitation and cannibalism. Overwhelmingly grisly, this action adventure based on a Michael Crichton novel has the earnestly mythical, quasi-anthropological quality of director John McTiernan's first feature, Nomads. In one of many partly corny, partly mesmerizing scenes, the convention of having actors speak accented English to represent different languages is beautifully acknowledged and transcended. Written by William Wisher and Warren Lewis.
