To the editors:

I have every reason to suspect that I was one of the "little old ladies" sitting behind critic Jack Helbig during El Salvador recently [June 30]. I am average sized, average aged, and a theatregoer from a time Helbig's parents do not remember. I never whisper in theatre and am seldom "uncontrollable." I do not and have never referred to another human being as "a mess." I did not do so that evening--of course, aren't critics supposed to be watching the play, not listening to the audience, crammed as they are with little old ladies whispering "Isn't he/she a mess!" at regular intervals?
