Tevo Howard, Kevin Starke, Jordan Zawideh Recommended Soundboard

When: Thu., Aug. 15, 10 p.m. 2013
Chicagoan Tevo Howard began DJing as a teenager during the mid-80s heyday of the city’s house scene, but he’s only been working seriously as a musician since 2006, when he walked away from DePaul’s graduate writing program and began building his own studio. It was good timing, because right about then a new generation of dance-music producers and listeners had started exploring their roots and were poised to return classic Chicago house to a dominant spot in the electronic scene. The recordings Howard has been releasing on his eponymous label draw inspiration from the raw, uncluttered analog thump of house in its earliest, most underground days, but they’re not overly reverent—he includes tell-tale traces of Detroit techno as well as dance music of significantly more recent vintage. And in case you’re curious about the path he didn’t take, he’s posted two of his novellas on his website. —Miles Raymer Kevin Starke and Jordan Zawideh open. Free with RSVP at do312.com/stardust.
