Testament of Youth

Rated PG-13 · 129 minutes · 2015

Biography, Historical Drama, War
Vera Brittain's celebrated memoir of the British home front in World War I gets a polished Masterpiece Theatre treatment that fails to diminish the story's wrenching emotional content. The free-thinking heroine (Alicia Vikander) clashes with her old-fashioned father (Dominic West) over her ambition to attend Oxford, but this conflict soon fades into insignificance as her brother (Taron Egerton) and her fiance (Kit Harington) are torn apart by their experiences in France and she interrupts her studies to become an army nurse. This might seem like a genteel Downton Abbey wannabe if not for the painful sense of an entire generation being decimated. TV veteran James Kent directed; with Emily Watson and Miranda Richardson.
