Terror, Bane, Naysayer, Rotting Out

A lot of people have scoffed at Rush Limbaugh for suggesting that the presence of a supervillain named "Bane" in The Dark Knight Rises is part of a conspiracy to remind voters about Mitt Romney's ugly business history—not just because the film, as a massive Hollywood blockbuster with a ridiculously long development process, has been in the works since long before Romney became the presumptive presidential candidate, but also because the character of Bane debuted in 1993 and was created and named in 1993 by avowed political conservatives. I think Limbaugh is on to something, though. In the late 90s and early 00s, a lot of the artsier kids in the hardcore community got pissed at how popular the resolutely blunt and aesthetically conservative music of a Massachusetts band called Bane had become, and as a former artsy hardcore kid that is literally the only reason I'm not voting for Mitt Romney in November. —Miles Raymer Terror headlines; Bane, Naysayer, and Rotting Out open.
