You've heard of meeting cute? Three lost souls meet monstrous in this black-comic fantasia by Irish writer Mark O'Rowe. Disembowelings, brainings, eyeball gougings, a broomstick-handle abortion, a couple very bad car accidents, and a sexy demon made completely of worms are all part of a night out for O'Rowe's cosmically hapless characters, who tell their stories in a series of rhymed monologues. The Abbey Theatre production that played Chicago in 2011 kept its reserve in the face of all this horror, the better to find the delicate notes of transcendence underneath. Here, director Jeffry Stanton takes another tack entirely—punching up the energy at every opportunity, pushing the actors' gestures so far that they start looking like American Sign Language. The result is an Interrobang Theatre Project show that's fierce from moment to moment (and very nearly worth recommending on that account) but lacks cumulative power. —Tony Adler
