Tennis, On an On, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats

When: Sat., Nov. 16, 10 p.m. 2013
Price: $15
Alaina Moore and her wispy, youthful voice will always be the centerpiece of Tennis, the husband-and-wife indie-pop act she began in 2010 with her husband, Patrick Riley (they have a drummer too). But from last year’s full-length, Young & Old, to the new five-song EP Small Sound (Communion) they’ve made a noticeable jump, cranking up the soulful glamor—the faint lo-fi fuzz appears forever banished—and adding a distinct groove with attitude, worthy of a pair of sultry backup singers. Overall it relies a little less on melodic indie-rock guitar and more on its money maker (aka Moore’s vocals). The third track, “Cured of Youth,” has a little disco, a little glam, and a little girl group, sax included—it looks like Tennis have some showing off they want to do. —Kevin Warwick On an On and Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats open.
