This collaborative endeavor, currently facilitated by Spudnik Press and cultural presenter Homeroom Chicago, has grown impressively since launching in 2010, when ten visual artists each selected a song of his or her choosing and responded to it with a piece of work. Its efforts have become more sophisticated and conceptually tight. The 2013 installment embraced the notion of synesthesia and featured composers affiliated with the classical music organization Access Contemporary Music combining efforts with visual artists like Lilli Carré and Jo Dery to produce corresponding work. This year turns toward improvisation. Artists including Alexander Stewart and Vesna Jovanovic have created pieces to parallel improvised performances developed into compositions by musicians like Josh Berman, Peter Maunu, and Ryan Packard. Spudnik will be releasing a limited-edition record-and-print collection chronicling the collaborations; tonight’s show features the finished compositions and presentations of the artwork. —Peter Margasak
