Tell Them We Are Rising

A paean to historically black colleges and universities, this brisk and meticulous feature from documentarian Stanley Nelson (The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution) covers the integral role HBCUs played in the African-American struggle for education rights. The film describes the beginnings of HBCUs as "contraband schools" built by slaves during the Civil War, then surveys the student demonstrations that took place during the civil rights movement and the activism that continues in the present day. Stunning archival photographs and footage supplement talking-head interviews with historians, scholars, HBCU alumni, and current HBCU students.
