Telepathe, Teengirl Fantasy, Aleks & the Drummer

When: Fri., June 5, 10 p.m. 2009
Price: $10
The recent fad for spaciness, fuzzy textures, and modulated effects like delay and chorus has been manifesting itself in an impressively broad range of styles, from electronic music to garage rock—I’m beginning to suspect that a lot of hipsters have stopped blowing their drug budgets on coke and started going for high-grade weed, which seems appropriate now that we’re in the exact opposite of a go-go boom time. I can’t speak to the habits of Melissa Livaudais and Busy Gangnes, aka Brooklyn duo Telepathe, but their recent Dance Mother (Iamsound) feels like a weed record to me, and a good one at that. Held together loosely by the women’s untrained voices, which sometimes sound like overhearing someone singing to herself, it bats the listener gently from tweaky interstellar synth-pop to a sort of electro-shoegaze—and it’s produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, who knows a thing or two about weed records. Teengirl Fantasy and Aleks & the Drummer open. —Miles Raymer
