Tecalitlan | Ukrainian Village/East Village | Mexican/Southwestern | Restaurant
Popular traditional Mexican restaurant, tops on the East Village cheapskate dining circuit.

Our Review

Prices have gone up in the last few years, but Tecalitlan remains king of the East Village cheapskate dining circuit, drawing a steady crowd of both Spanish- and English-speaking locals. Free, bottomless helpings of salty chips and chunky, cilantro-laced salsa appear almost before you’ve shaken off your coat, and the food that follows is simple and satisfying, if predictable. Steaming combination platters, hefty burritos, and the usual array of a la carte tacos, tortas, tostadas, etc, emerge from the kitchen with dizzying speed -- a blessing if you’re in a hurry, but not so conducive to a leisurely evening out.Servers are unfailingly gracious and don’t seem to mind lingerers who stick around to toy with just one more margarita. The dimly lit front room features a ceiling mural depicting the sun’s daily course across the sky. The back room is bathed in fluorescent light and a lot less charming.
