Documentary
Tchinda Andrade, an outspoken transvestite living on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente, casts such a large shadow over the local culture that other gay men on the island are referred to as "Tchindas." This documentary follows Andrade in the days leading up to an annual carnival, for which he and his friends prepare an elaborate parade float. Directors Pablo García and Marc Serena concentrate on the hard work that goes into their project (constructing props, making costumes, teaching choreography to local children who will accompany the float), but also broaden their perspective to include life around Andrade's neighborhood, creating brief, affectionate portraits of the people who live there. What emerges is a lovely slice of life that celebrates the spirit of a community. In Portuguese with subtitles.
