Austrian painter Egon Schiele was already notorious for his erotic artwork when he was arrested and put on trial for seducing a minor in 1912. Playwright Julia Jordan takes a morally ambiguous look at the affair: Schiele's treatment of the girl falls into an eerie space between the paternal and the romantic. Angela Alise Johnson conveys the volatility of youth as the artist's forbidden love interest, navigating the complications of a relationship one minute and fighting over oranges and candies the next. But Nicholas Harper lacks passion as the charismatic Schiele, and much of Prologue Theatre Company's production suffers from a similar blandness. Director Julie Ritchey seems bent on turning a story about burning desire into a cerebral affair marked by muted colors and grating, minimalist music. --Dan Jakes
