When Michael Sam became the first openly gay player in the NFL earlier this year, the reaction from fans and other players (at least publicly) was mostly positive verging on indifferent. Things don't work out that way for major-league center fielder Darren Lemming in this 2002 drama by Richard Greenberg; Darren's coming out results in ostracism, shower-room panic, and eventually violence. But the trouble with the script isn't that it's outdated—it’s that it feels smug and phony. Everyone who passes through this locker room seems to be either a hyperintelligent gasbag or an unlettered simp to be condescended to. The wooden performances in David Belew's unpolished staging for Eclectic Full Contact Theatre only reinforce the characters' flatness and the dialogue's inauthenticity. —Zac Thompson
