I don't disagree with the observation that Gaiman's editing of the book has little to do with Gaiman's best-known writing. But I'm more of the school of thought that editors should try to stick to quality, not to impose their specific tastes in genre or style, especially not in a book that tries to represent the best of ALL of what's going on in the field.

Isaac Asimov would have done science fiction a disservice if he'd done so when he edited anthologies: his works are widely considered classics in the field, but by the time he was editing, the genre of science fiction had changed, and its best work had little of that Asimovian flavor.
