Korean director Chan-wook Park scored a critical hit with the pulp psychodrama Oldboy, which began as a metaphysical puzzler about a man being punished for an unknown crime but then fizzled into a diabolical revenge drama. This 2002 feature offers the same dramatic visual style and cruel plot twists, but the mechanical retribution is even more boring. A saintly deaf man (Ha-kyun Shin), needing money for his sister's kidney transplant, kidnaps the young daughter of a rich industrialist (Kang-ho Song), but the scheme goes awry, and payback is most definitely a bitch. In Korean with subtitles. R, 121 min.
