Mountainous seascapes form the backdrop of this pain-filled 1997 romance between a Russian who turns up in an English coastal village (Vincent Perez) and a local woman who's shunned by her community (Rachel Weisz). Tales of prejudice often urge us to identify with the outsiders, but this adaptation of the Conrad story “Amy Foster” is told from the perspective of a judgmental doctor (Ian McKellen) with complicated feelings toward the young woman and her new friend. His feature-length flashback includes information about them that he couldn't possibly know, but this inconsistency may unintentionally support a theme of the story: that we can easily mistake our own biases for truth. Beeban Kidron directed. 115 min.
