Based on a novella by Ernest Lehman and a 1957 movie starring Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster, this 2002 musical tells the Faustian tale of ambitious press agent Sidney Falco, who sells his soul to a ruthless gossip columnist modeled on Walter Winchell. The show boasts a jazzy though not very memorable score by Marvin Hamlisch and some enjoyably noirish dialogue by John Guare (drawing on the film script by Lehman and Clifford Odets). But a labored plot and an intrusive chorus of leering nighthawks crowd out the story's ostensible protagonists. John Glover's intimate staging for Kokandy Productions evokes a Manhattan at once stylish and sleazy. The show's chief asset is David Schlumpf, who plays Sidney with a blend of boyish charm and sweaty panic. —Zac Thompson
