Supreme Cuts, The-Drum, Mister Lies, Different Sleep

When: Wed., July 11, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $12
Columbia College sophomore Nick Zanca dove into the local electronic-music scene when he moved here in the fall, and in January he became Mister Lies, producing the kind of warm, inviting songs that drive so many music bloggers into a tizzy. Zanca's pulsing, swelling tunes recall UK dubstep from the days before the dominance of "drops" (those maximalist, concrete-shaking wub-wub breakdowns) and the nickname "brostep." The tracks on February's self-released Hidden Neighbors EP mix hollow, syncopated snare hits, bare-bones synth tones, and warped vocal samples; they wouldn't sound out of place on an early Hyperdub compilation. Zanca seems more interested in expanding his palette than zeroing in on any single aesthetic, and on Mass (Absent Fever), a recent collaborative EP with local producer Different Sleep, he draws from the well of Chicago house. Given that he's working on his first full-length (due in the fall on Lefse), who knows what new styles will pop up in his set tonight—the first live Mister Lies performance in Chicago. —Leor Galil Supreme Cuts headline; The-Drum (DJ set), Mister Lies, and Different Sleep open.
