Superstar

A spoiled Iranian screen idol (Shahab Hosseini), whose gleaming white pad is decorated with moody black-and-white photos of himself, meets a teenage girl (Fataneh Malek-Mohammadi) who claims to be his daughter, moves in with him, and does her best to disrupt his busy love life. Writer-director Tahmineh Milani is best known for films exposing the plight of women in the Islamic republic (she spent some time in prison for remarks she made after the release of her 2001 feature The Hidden Half). Any such themes are downplayed in this sentimental story, though Milani’s teasingly ambiguous treatment of the young woman pays off handsomely in the end: without truly knowing her, the hero can never really know himself. In Farsi with subtitles. 106 min.
