Sugarland Express

A fluid, entertaining chase picture, this was Steven Spielberg's theatrical debut. Goldie Hawn and William Atherton are two none-too-bright losers who are pursued by most of the Texas highway patrol as they race to save their child from an adoption agency. The pace falters near the end, but overall this is a brilliantly calculated audience pleaser (which, for reasons unclear, failed to find an audience on its first release). The real auteurs may be screenwriters Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins, who developed this strain into the similar Corvette Summer, while Spielberg went on to rubber sharks and rocket ships (1974).
