Eric Bogosian has given his 1995 visit-to-Slackerville drama a 21st century makeover with updated cultural references (Tiger Woods, for example). But it's Bries Vannon's staging, not the script, that makes this inaugural outing by The Nine notable. Vannon's actors prowl and howl along the edges of the seating area, hemming in the audience while delivering obscenity-laced arias about the post-teenage wasteland. With its The Big Chill-meets-Neil LaBute resonances, the situation--a rock-star peer visits his loser former friends--feels derivative and forced. The performances contain fire and wit, though--especially Austin Oie's as Tim, a disgruntled, alcoholic vet. --Kerry Reid
