Strand of Oaks, Kevin Morby, Adia Victoria

When: Sat., Jan. 17, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $15, $100 TNK pass
Kevin Morby, former bassist for shambling psych-pop band Woods (and former guitarist and occasional songwriter for indie-pop outfit Babies), has channeled his energies into what’s so far been a prolific solo career, with two full-length releases since 2013. You can hear traces of the weedy aesthetic of Woods on the recent Still Life (Woodist), but his upbeat originals and lean arrangements more often recall the early-70s sound of Bob Dylan, a comparison made even more apt by Morby’s pinched vocal range. Piano and horns add color and depth here and there, but more often than not he sings against little more than hypnotically strummed guitar and an austere rhythm section—and it’s to his credit that he gets by with such modest means. Even though he saps some of the energy of “Amen” with a spoken interlude, he manages to make its simple melody work for nearly eight minutes. This show is part of the Tomorrow Never Knows festival. —Peter Margasak
