Stoop Stories doesn't confine itself to a flight of stairs. In 65 minutes, Dael Orlandersmith takes us all around and into Harlem, playing a rich assortment of characters like the good-time girl who refuses to regret the pretty Latino boys who steer her wrong, junkies who are the last to know they're hooked, a curmudgeon splenetic over taking two trains to the West Village only to miss Nina Simone, and a Holocaust survivor who remembers Billie Holiday singing "Strange Fruit." Orlandersmith never indulges in easy, empty impersonations. With an upfront intimacy reminiscent of beat poetry performance, she lets her finely focused tale-spinning and a superb musical backdrop create the portraits. --Lawrence Bommer
