Stone Temple Pilots, Crash Kings

When: Tue., Sept. 4, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $59
Of all the first wave of alternative-rock bands to break on MTV, the one that's benefited the most from the recent outbreak of 90s nostalgia is the Stone Temple Pilots. Initially the group was considered the ne plus ultra in inauthenticity—a bunch of southern California bandwagon jumpers with no ties to the grunge scene they were ripping off and no indie cred to offset their immediate major-label success. But their reputation as poseurs has mostly evaporated, leaving behind songs that are equally indebted to classic rock and straight-up pop—it's surprisingly easy to imagine "Sex Type Thing" done in the style of Like a Virgin-era Madonna—and way better than slacker snobs were willing to give them credit for. —Miles Raymer
