On Saint Patrick's Day in 1990, 13 major paintings, including a rare Vermeer, were stolen from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Rebecca Dreyfus's 2005 documentary on the continuing search for these masterpieces features detective Harold Smith, still energetic at 75, and colorful crooks who may or may not have had anything to do with the theft. Dreyfus includes lots of facts, and correspondence explaining how Gardner built her collection a century ago adds context. But the experts' comments on the Vermeer are mostly plot synopses, and many threads are left hanging—what was that “Rembrandt” a reporter glimpsed in a warehouse? It's not just paintings that are missing here. 84 min.
