Re: “Mother's ruin

I posted this at the TOC blog, but wanted to post it here, too, because I'm a narcissist.

From their blog: "Chicago is not 'behind" New York; it's different"

Seeing as I grew up in Chicago my entire life, lived there for six years (which included two-and-a-half at TOC and a year-and-some-change writing for this here fine establishment) and now live in New York, I could not agree with this statement more. Who gives a crap if Chicago opens a bar that purports to be all gin and decides to include some non-gin drinks. Does spirit exclusivity equal coolness?

Remember high school? The cool kids were the ones who snubbed nerds. (Note: I was a nerd.) In real, adult life, the cool kids are the ones who are nice to everyone—who don't care what other people think about them because they're having too much fun. THAT'S the Chicago I love and miss.

And, to be perfectly honest, that's pretty much the attitude of New York, too. The two cities are far more alike than we think. Chicago doesn't care about keeping up with New York, just as New York doesn't care about keeping up with Chicago. Or being "first." Or starting trends, even.

All we New Yorkers care about is finding someone who has cheaper rent than us and being secretly jealous of them. WE ARE THE TREND SETTERS OF FINDING SOMEONE WHO HAS CHEAPER RENT THAN US AND BEING SECRETLY JEALOUS OF THEM!
