Steve Lehman & Cory Smythe

When: Sat., March 7, 8:30 p.m. 2015
Price: free with RSVP
Last year both alto saxophonist Steve Lehman and pianist Cory Smythe played on records that blended jazz and classical sensibilities without shortchanging either discipline. Lehman’s Mise en Abîme (Pi) used spectral harmonies to meditate on Bud Powell’s legacy in otherworldly shades, while on Tyshawn Sorey’s Alloy (Pi), the combination of Smythe’s considered touch and his capacity to suspend notes outside of time found common ground between Bill Evans and Morton Feldman. Smythe and Lehman also share an affiliation with the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), and this concert is part of Open ICE, a workshop series intended to make the process of developing new music transparent and accessible. The two men will use experimental composer Alvin Lucier’s explorations of beating tones and gradually evolving forms as starting points for their own pieces. —Bill Meyer
