With their nerdy, modern, tongue-in-cheek style and Andy Kaufman-esque anticomedy tendencies, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain may seem like comedians for the highbrow McSweeney's set (Black has written for McSweeney's Internet Tendency). But the trio--NYU college pals who started performing as Stella in 1997 and had a short-lived show on Comedy Central--can still appeal to a mainstream audience, especially when they linger on the sounds and phrasings of the American vernacular. (When Wain tries to take back a comment, Showalter goes Valley-girlish, telling him he can’t because it's "out there now," and Black intones, in a thumping cadence, "It is floating in the ether like a turd.") Their live act, done without costumes or props, is a mix of old and new material that Wain calls "neither stand-up nor sketch--just sort of shtick/banter." It's a carefully controlled banter, though: their nimble wordplay and masterful funnyman/straight-man dynamics recall classic comedy duos.
