Northern Indiana has long been a popular dumping ground for underwolrd bodies. After Al Capone beat his henchmen Albert Anselmi and John Scalise to death with a baseball bat, their bodies were found near Hammond. The body of north-side mobster Ted Newberry, whose hit was rumored to have been ordered by Chicago mayor Anton Cermak, was dumped at the Indian Dunes.

Two characters in the Iran-contra scandal met in Dan Quayle's Indiana Senate office. Robert Owen, who read a mawkish poem in Oliver North's defense at the hearings, was working for Quayle when he met John Hull, whose ranch in Costa Rica near the Nicaraguan border was used as a contra base.
