StarKid Productions consisted mostly of University of Michigan students back in 2009, when A Very Potter Musical hit the Internet. Since then, Starkid parodies--the original, along with A Very Potter Sequel and Me and My Dick--have collected 54 million Youtube hits. Now, newly transplanted to Chicago, the troupe are demonstrating their live chops with this ambitious, kitschy, big-hearted sci-fi musical. Set on a planet dominated by giant socialist insects, Starship pits misfit Bug against his hyper-conformist society as well as a band of witless colonizing humans. Half of Darren Criss's catchy pop songs are lyrically uninspired, but the script by Matt Lang, Nick Lang, Brian Holden, and Joseph Walker ingeniously turns satire into heart-tugging romance. This joyous show has "next big thing" written all over it. --Justin Hayford
