The ingredients for Ruth Margraff's one-act include The Hunger Games, video games, Japanese sci-fi blockbuster Battle Royale, and a touch of redneck Americana. As directed by Karen Yates, Red Tape Theatre's production features ambitious, evocative staging and costumes. But the dense dialogue proves overwhelming. That could be the point, of course—a verbal onslaught about society's desensitization to violence and the media's thin grasp on reality. Even so, it allows few entry points into the characters' heads and little room for empathy. As the play's narrator and the host of its brutal war-zone competition, Lyndsay Kane gives an entertaining performance that resonates well with the show's postapocalyptic themes. Prancing around the stage, talking in a singsong trill, she appears alternately titillated, uncomfortable, and blissfully ignorant of the dehumanization surrounding her. —Marissa Oberlander
