The Chicago Folk & Roots Festival is gone, but the Old Town School of Folk Music isn't out of the fest business entirely: for 2012 it's teamed up with the Lincoln Square Chamber of Commerce for the first Square Roots festival. Attractions include local food, regional craft beer (participating brewers include Founders, Two Brothers, Metropolitan, and Greenbush), and a diverse array of local and international music on two Lincoln Avenue stages and inside the Old Town School. The outdoor stages are at Sunnyside and Wilson, and on Friday they're the only ones running: Garland Jeffreys and the Hoyle Brothers play the Sunnyside stage, and Carpacho Super Combo, Isabel Mulcahy, and Jonas Friddle & the Majority play the Wilson stage. On Saturday Afro-Colombian fusion band M.A.K.U. Soundsystem headlines the Wilson stage, after sets by Malian guitarist Sidi Toure (see Soundboard), Puerto Rican salsa group Orquesta el Macabeo, and Magic Carpet, to name a few; the Sunnyside stage lineup includes the Waco Brothers, Ezra Furman, Musikanto, and Little Miss Ann. The Old Town School also hosts music, dance, storytelling, and audience-participation jams, in both Maurer Hall (4544 N. Lincoln) and Szold Hall (4545 N. Lincoln) as well as in the east lobby of the 4545 N. Lincoln building; sets include Taj Weekes & Adowa, DJ James Vincent, Steve Levitt, and an African jam (with members of Toure's band) led by Nathaniel Braddock. On Sunday locals Canasta top the Sunnyside stage bill, which also includes Elephant Revival and Kong Fuzi; among the acts on the Wilson stage are New Delhi band Mrigya, Bailey Dee's Rockabilly Round Up, the Young Stracke All-Stars, and Lindsay & the Shimmies. Inside the Old Town School, the entertainment includes the Harlan Terson Blues Quartet, a Woody Guthrie jam led by Mark Dvorak, Paseo Jarocho, AfriCaribe, and Layali Arabia with Erika Ochoa.
