Square Roots Festival | Lincoln between Montrose and Wilson | Fairs & Festivals | Chicago Reader
This is a past event.
When: July 10-12 2015
Programmed by Chicago institution the Old Town School of Folk Music, the Square Roots Festival once again rolls into Lincoln Square with more than 50 musical acts on five stages—two outdoor, and three inside the pair of Old Town School buildings—as well as loads of workshops, demos, and dance lessons. Friday is headlined by punk legends the Mekons, with support from singer-songwriter Nora Jane Struthers, local bluesman Jimmy Burns, and bomba group Plena Libre. Montreal-based Haitian singer Wesli closes out the festival on Saturday, while alt-rock stalwarts Urge Overkill, local indie rockers Bailiff, banjo man Al Scorch, and jazz trumpeter Kermit Ruffins play prior. Festivities wrap on Sunday with a headlining set from forever-entertaining folksinger Robbie Fulks, who will be performing with his Bluegrass Explosion. Other performers that day include country band the Cactus Blossoms, Moroccan Gnawa musician Hassan Hakmoun, and Cuban group Tiempo Libre. Aside from the festival’s eclectic bill of music, the other main draw is a beer selection that will include more than 30 brews from craft breweries like Half Acre, Begyle, and Solemn Oath. —Luca Cimarusti
