Fourth-wave emo is still new to the Billboard charts, but it’s been a going concern long enough for bands in the scene to form, break up, and then reunite. Pennsylvania three-piece Spraynard, for instance, split up in 2012, then got back together this year behind a compilation of rarities and B sides called The Mark Tom and Patrick Show (Asian Man). Its blazing, headlong tunes have a lot in common with the gruff, punchy pop-punk I’ve come to expect from Asian Man Records, but they also traffic in the radiant, uplifting guitar melodies that are emo’s bread and butter. Spraynard understand what makes emo great, but they also know it’s a little silly; on “Everyone Everywhere” they spoof the huge, dramatic pop-rock of their scenemates Everyone Everywhere, with tongue-in-cheek lyrics that poke fun at the genre’s fixation on suburban malaise. —Leor Galil
