The Tympanic Theatre Company performs seven short plays by four writers who take a critical view of religion. The best pieces provoke thought or laughter by examining familiar issues from a fresh perspective. In Daniel Caffrey's "The Thundercats in: Missionary Madness," Pentecostals try to convert characters from the Thundercats cartoon, while in Caffrey's more serious "Morality Play" a desperate teenage Virgin Mary contemplates an abortion. Some of the other plays feel unclear, unfocused, and unfinished. But the company deserves credit for its bold choices and for tackling a difficult topic in its debut effort. --Zac Thompson a Through 9/15: Thu-Sat 8 PM, Side Project Theatre, 1439 W.
