Horror, Science fiction
Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley star as cutting-edge geneticists whose secret experiment splicing together human and animal DNA yields a darling little girl with a stinger, crooked legs, and eyes in her temples. Fearing exposure at their corporate lab, they take the creature home to their apartment, then out to their house in the country; she’s the daughter they’ve never had, but as she rapidly grows from childhood to adolescence, additional mutations begin to develop. Echoes of James Whale’s Frankenstein movies reverberate through this creepy Canadian sci-fi tale, whose innocent, confused beast is alternately terrifying and pathetic. But the movie carves out its own psychological terrain as well, pondering the emotional storms of both childhood and parenthood as relations in the little family grow ever more peverse. Vincenzo Natali (Cube) directed a script he wrote with Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor.
