Dutch youth in revolt, and they have a lot to revolt against. Before he moved to the U.S. to make Robocop, Total Recall, and Basic Instinct, old-wave Dutch director Paul Verhoeven made surprising inroads on the American market with his angry, frequently scatological, but serenely well-crafted films (Turkish Delight, Keetje Tippel). This one has three teenage dirt-bike racers competing for the affections of proletarian siren Renee Soutendijk. Verhoeven's priorities alternate between exploitation and social commentary, though his liberal profusions are compromised somewhat by a brutally staged homosexual gang rape (1980).
