Our Review

We tried both the Indonesian Ginger BBQ and the Singapore Tikka at Soulwich, the little sandwich shop in downtown Evanston, but I honestly can’t tell you which was which—they were roughly equivalent in blandness, and both arrived under a mountain of shredded carrots and cilantro. That "signature" combination tops each of the eight sandwiches on the menu here; for fillings there's a choice of chicken, pork, steak, and seitan. The Indonesian barbecue (with chicken) was, as far as I could make out, the gloopy, sweet one, while the tikka (with pork) was pretty aggressively nothing. Nor did we have much better luck with the Wasabi Caesar Chicken Salad, whose dressing wasn’t dissimilar from the one on the barbecue sandwich, only with so much more salt as to be nearly inedible. Speaking of salt, though, you might take this review with a grain or two: Soulwich appears to be pretty universally beloved by Yelpers, and even has its partisans on LTHForum.com.
