Mahsun is a homeless thief barely surviving in a seedy waterfront district of Istanbul; sullen yet kindhearted, irresponsible yet decent, he cares for a heroin-addicted hooker and steals cars for shelter only to return them cleaned. Director Dervis Zaim uses Mahsun (a marvelously stoic Ahmet Ugurlu) as a Turkish everyman, a mirror reflecting the hypocrisy and decadence around him. But this 1996 film?s muckraking overwhelms its sense of drama: Zaim captures the bleak environment but puts Mahsun through a series of unlikely situations and forced ironies that can?t be dressed up with odd camera angles or flashy montages (1996).
