Solitude Point

A middle-aged Japanese war bride living in Baton Rouge (Mitsuko Baisho) slips into the fog of Alzheimer's disease in this 1997 Japanese feature by Hisako Matsui. The drama is watered down by Matsui's earnest tone and ponderous pacing, and little is gained from the flashbacks to Japan, the crazed Vietnam war vet who lives in the neighborhood, or the subplot about a past incident that troubles the husband (Bo Svenson). Only the leads' performances mitigate the tedium of this rather alien take on a wrenching family predicament. In English and subtitled Japanese. 97 min.
